Woman coaxed down from bridge

A 46-year-old woman threatening to hurl herself off Rochester Bridge was coaxed down by police.

The woman had been sitting on the bridge with her legs dangling over the edge when officers arrived.

Traffic and pedestrians were diverted on the Strood-bound side of the bridge at about 3.20pm last Thursday while she was persuaded to return to safety.

A lifeboat from Sheerness was called but the crew turned back after being infomed that the woman had decided to come down. She was on the bridge about 30 minutes.

The woman was taken to Gillingham's Medway Maritime Hospital. She has not been named.
