A WOMAN died after she was hit by a train travelling at about 80mph through a railway station at Marden near Maidstone.

British Transport Police have launched an investigation into the tragedy but have confirmed they are not treating the death as suspicious.

The woman has not yet been identified. She was struck by the train at just after 11pm on Friday.

The train, the 22.00 Charing Cross to Ramsgate, had not been due to stop at the station. Emergency services were called, but the woman was pronounced dead at the scene.

The line and the station were closed for just over two hours and trains were re-routed via other stations, with the line re-opening at 1.20am.

They have released a description of the woman. She was white, between 5ft 2ins and 5ft 4ins, of medium build, with light brown, straight hair.

She was wearing a pink and white striped George top, size 8-10, a white, woollen cardigan with blue shapes, which was made in Equador, and blue jeans, size 29ins waist.

Insp Geoff Perkins, from British Transport Police, said: "There was some disruption to trains, but at that time of night, it did not cause disruption to too many passengers.

"We are satisfied no-one else was involved in the incident and we are not treating the death as suspicious. However, we would like to hear from anyone who may be able to assist us in finding out who the deceased was."
