DETECTIVES today appealed for information following what they describe as a racially aggravated assault.

A 57-year-old woman was using a cashpoint machine in High Street, Gillingham, when another female approached her and became abusive.

The victim was then punched and had her bankcard snapped in half by the attacker. At this stage another woman stepped in and stopped the assault. Police say the victim did not suffer any injuries.

The suspect is described as being white, aged about 18, of slim build with brown hair worn in a ponytail. The incident occurred between 10.30am and 10.40am on Monday, November 12.

Det Con Robin Stump said: "We have a specialist unit at Medway to investigate hate crime and I would like to stress that this kind of behaviour will simply not be tolerated.

"We are keen to hear from anyone who may be able to help us with this investigation. All calls to us are treated in the strictest confidence and will be fully researched."
