A WOMAN had a miraculous escape after being trapped underneath a train. She escaped with a broken arm and spinal injuries.

The incident happened yesterday afternoon as the train was slowing down on its approach to Gillingham Railway Station. At the time the train was travelling at only 10-15 mph.

A spokesman for Medway Maritime Hospital said today that the woman was in a stable, non-life threatening condition.

A spokesman for Medway Ambulance said: "She was on the tracks and she walked in front of the train. After examining the front of the train I would say she had a miraculous escape and she was very lucky that the train was moving relatively slowly. If it had been going its normal speed she would almost certainly have been killed."

Two ambulance crews from Medway station and a Green Goddess crew battled for almost an hour to free the middle-aged woman.

The Medway Ambulance spokesman added: "She was extricated by the ambulance crew using a long board." Counselling was offered to everyone who was involved in the incident.
