A house was cordoned off after a woman was found dead in a village.

Officers raced to the scene after the grim discovery was made in Broomfield, near Herne Bay, yesterday.

A house and back garden in Peartree Road were taped off and forensic teams were called to investigate at 11.40am.

Neighbours were quizzed by police and five officers and four police cars were still at the address more than five hours after the body was found.

It has not been confirmed who the dead woman was, but she is believed to have lived at the house.

Neighbour Gwendoline Troth said officers had been round and asked questions.

She said: "They asked me if I was in last night and this morning and told me a woman had been found dead.

"I don't know anything at all. It all seems a bit strange to me. Nothing dubious ever happens around here, but I suppose the police can't be too careful. They've been here for most of the day.

"I'd had the odd conversation with the woman who lives at the address and I'd seen her at the bus stop, but I don't know her name.

"I've lived here for 14 years and she was definitely here before me. She lived by herself."

Kent Police confirmed they were called to the house following reports a woman's body had been found.
