The Woolwich Ferry has been suspended today as staff attend the funeral of a Swanley crewman who died on the service two weeks ago.

Ben Woollacott, 19, died after falling into the River Thames on August 3.

He is believed to have been hit by the boat's propeller and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Andrew White, chief executive for Serco's Marine business, which operates the ferry on behalf of Transport for London, said: "Ben was part of close-knit team at Woolwich and the impact of this tragedy cannot be underestimated.

"Ben was a valued colleague and friend and, having completed his apprenticeship at the Woolwich Ferry, was looking forward to continuing the family tradition of working on the River Thames.

"His presence at Woolwich Ferry will be missed by all, not only because of his natural ability but also his colourful and friendly nature.

"On behalf of everyone at Serco I want to express our sincerest sympathies and condolences to Ben's family and friends at this tragic time."

Thames River Services and Crown River Cruises, which offers sightseeing tours, has also suspended their services as a mark of respect.

The normal two-boat service on the Woolwich Ferry will start again at 6:10am tomorrow.
