WORK is underway on a new £6.5 million spine road in Thanet.
The road will link Westwood Cross at Broadstairs and Ramsgate's Newington estate, including the Marlowe Academy.
Kent County Council's aim is to open up the EuroKent site, improve access to new developments at Westwood Cross and ease local congestion.
The project is being jointly funded by KCC, Thanet District Council, the South East England Development Agency (SEEDA) and Rose Farm Estates.
Cllr Keith Ferrin, KCC cabinet member for highways, said: "This new road is important as it will make it easier for motorists to get around this busy area of Thanet. Residents and businesses alike will benefit when the road is complete."
Leader of Thanet District Council Cllr Sandy Ezekiel added: "The work sends out a strong message to potential investors that we are open for business and determined to have the best possible transport links in Thanet."
Work is expected to be completed in September.
