CONCRETE, bricks and scaffolding poles came crashing down in a residential street, damaging cars and narrowly missing homes.

A six-storey block of Sixties-built flats in Carpeaux Close, Chatham, was in the latter stages of demolition when the incident happened.

It is believed workers had just left the site when the scaffolding gave way, shortly after 1.30pm last Friday.

It is not known how many were working at the site on the day. Three parked cars were damaged but no one was hurt.

Paul Hewitt, of Imperial Gate, High Street, Chatham, whose flat overlooks the scene, said: "I thought there was going to be carnage. I can’t believe no one was killed.”

Developer Orbit South Housing Association is managing the project to build affordable housing on the site.

A spokesman for the company said: “We are obviously concerned as to how this incident happened."

He added that a full report was being prepared by the contractor.
