World Cup campaign to clear arrest warrants

POLICE are using the upcoming World Cup as a tactic to try and clear outstanding court warrants.

Officers are warning "avid football fans" who are wanted on warrant that they run the risk of being arrested during matches if they fail to hand themselves in.

Les Worthington, warrants officer for Mid Kent Police, said: "This method will assist front line officers in working effectively.

"I warn those avid football fans with outstanding warrants to get in touch so they can be dealt with prior to kick-off.

"They may be taking time out to watch the game, but our officers work 24 hours a day, seven days a week and will not be watching matches on duty.

"Our cells do not come equipped with televisions or radios."

Police also used this tactic during the 2002 World Cup.
