Yob attack lollipop lady fights on

A lollipop lady, who was forced to stop working after yobs threw missiles at her, has still not returned to work.

Janet Edwards has been helping pupils at St Margaret’s of Troy Town Primary School, Rochester, to cross the road, for the past 33 years. But for about nine months she has been the target of a series of attacks.

It is understood missiles, including marbles, are being thrown from Weavers Court, a new housing development opposite the school in King Street.

Her case has been taken up by Unison representative Brian Kelly, and meetings were set up to discuss the situation. After the latest hearing, Mr Kelly will submit a statement to Medway Council highlighting what Janet and her union feel are its failings as an employer, to prove her case.

A spokesman for Medway Council said: “We have been working closely with the police and housing association in this matter, and have been notified by the association that they are in the process of taking legal proceedings against the perpetrators of these incidents.

“We consider we have been supportive to Mrs Edwards to date, and are exploring with her all the options on the best way forward for her.”

Jackie Andrews, assistant director for Orbit Housing Association, which manages Weavers Court, added: “Orbit South Housing Association is undertaking legal action to resolve the situation at Weavers Court, and is working closely with the police and the school to do so.”
