A 12-year old child is recovering in hospital after falling 20ft while climbing a high rope course at an adventure centre in Medway.

The accident happened at the Arethusa Venture Centre in Upnor at around noon on Saturday.

An investigation has been launched into what bosses say the most serious incident in the centre's history.

The youngster suffered injuries to her hip and both legs.

The Kent Air Ambulance was called and landed a few hundred feet away on the jetty.

After an assessment by paramedics, she was taken to Medway Maritime Hospital by land ambulance. The girl, believed to be from London, remains on a ward but is said to be recovering well.

A spokesman for the centre said: "An internal inquiry into the accident has been carried out, involving a full examination

of the equipment, incident reports and witness statements.

"The Health and Safety

Executive has also been notified and the Centre will be co-operating fully with any

investigation.

"The Arethusa Venture Centre has an excellent safety record.

"This is the first incident involving a young person falling from height in the centre’s history."
