THIS week the Kent Messenger Group launches the Kent Teacher of the Year Awards 2003 and we need your help.
The awards have been introduced to acknowledge the work of teachers making a real difference in their schools. And whether you are a pupil, a parent, a fellow teacher or another member of staff, this is your chance to make sure that their efforts are recognised.
Kent Messenger Group managing editor Mike Whiting explained: "The first stage of the awards is to find four regional Teachers Of The Year. Together with our sponsors we are looking for a teacher who is making a real difference to the lives of their pupils. There are plenty out there and we want to hear about them."
The winners of the regional awards will go on to compete against each other for the overall title of Kent Teacher of the Year.
Keith Bowley of Saga Group Ltd, sponsors of the South Kent Regional Award, said: "In my working role I have been involved with many of the schools in Shepway. Changes in curriculum, new and varied tests have proven to be a difficult period for all involved. Like me, many of my colleagues have supported the school community at large and have seen at close hand the sterling work provided by so many of its teachers. There are awards for so many justifiable cases, this in my mind is one well worthy of recognition."
Mark Walters, of Lloyds TSB Business Banking in Kent, sponsors of the North Kent Regional Award, said: “The education and development of our children is the cornerstone of our society. I am delighted to be involved in a scheme that rewards and recognises the invaluable work that teachers do for the county”.
Andrew Fermor, of law firm Cripps Harries Hall, sponsors of the West Kent Regional Award, said: "We are delighted to support the Kent Messenger in promoting these excellent awards. Education is the cornerstone on which our society is built, yet the efforts of our teachers so often go unrecognised. This is an ideal opportunity to ensure that recognition is given where it is so well deserved."
The East Kent Regional Award is sponsored by Kent County Council. Graham Badman, Director Of Education And Libraries, said: "Most of us will remember a teacher from our past with affection -- not just for their abilities as a teacher but for inspiring us and making a real difference to our lives.
"Too often they are unsung heroes and KCC is extremely pleased to be able to sponsor the Kent Messenger’s Teacher of the Year Awards. Many will be nominated I am sure. Together with my colleagues at KCC, I look forward to meeting the best of the best."
The awards are open to any class or subject teacher working in a school within the area. Nominating is easy. Simply click on the link below and fill out the online form. The closing date is Friday, July 11, 2003.
