From the cradle to the grave. That was the motto when the NHS was launched on July 5, 1948.

Now, 60 years on, many people believe it remains the best health service in the world. But for others the jury is well and truly out.

Retired consultant Robert Hardwick, 86, helped shaped the health service in Maidstone, and remains a fan.

"Where the NHS lets itself down is the treatment of minor ailments," said Dr Harwick, from Headcorn, "but if you suffer an emergency it is unbeatable. I still think it is a wonderful organisation."

Medway Hospital Radio was broadcasting 1940s music, there was a photo exhibition of the hospital's history and the John Spence Gallery was hosting exhibition stalls manned by nurses staff dressed in traditional nurse uniform.

Staff at Priority House in Maidstone Hospital will plant a tree on Monday to commemorate the anniversary.
