A GANG of teenagers pelted police with bottles and urinated off a roof after the officers were drafted in to protect firefighters.

A fire crew was called to the Wallis Park area of Northfleet just before 11pm on Sunday to put out a suspicious car fire.

A firefighter said: "We didn't have any problem fighting the fire but there was a large gang of kids hanging around and we weren't very comfortable."

The crew had put out the blaze, left the area and was on its way back to the station when another call from the same area came in.

"We turned round and headed back, but called the police as we were worried about the gang," the fireman said. As the fire engine drove into College Road the firefighters saw the gang had moved onto a nearby roof.

As the firefighters started tackling the blaze in a rubbish chute, both emergency services had to dodge bottles and urine coming from the roof.

"We were all okay but a police car was hit and the window was broken," the firefighter said.

A police spokesman said the first patrol car on the scene called for back-up due to the number of teenagers in the gang. He added: "No-one was arrested on the night but we would like to hear from anyone in the area at the time who may know who the youths were."
