Zimbabwean prime minister 'not coming to Ashford'

by Sarah Marshall

An intriguing piece of news has appeared on Ashford Borough Council's website saying the Zimbabwean prime minister will not be coming to the town.

The statement says: "Ashford Borough Council would like to confirm that, contrary to some news reports, a rally to be addressed by Morgan Tsvangirai on Saturday will not be held at the Julie Rose Stadium."

A spokesman for the council said: "Ashford Borough Council and Ashford Leisure Trust were approached by a representative from the Zimbabwean prime minister's office to discuss the possibility of holding a rally at the Julie Rose Stadium as part of Mr Tsvangirai's goodwill world tour.

"A meeting was held but the prime minister's office was unable to proceed. We have been advised by the Foreign Office that a rally will now take place at Southwark Cathedral, London."
