Charlton Athletic 1 Manchester City 0

CHARLTON recorced only their second Premiership win of the season as they overcame Manchester City at The Valley on Saturday.

The home side scored the winner just before the half hour mark when Darren Bent was in the right place to profit from Jerome Thomas's excellent cross and head in his eighth goal of the campaign.

It was almost 2-0 less than two minutes later but Andy Reid wasted a fine opportunity by blasting over the bar.

The Addicks were indebted to goalkeeper Scott Carson for preserving their lead deep into first half stoppage time when he clawed away a Georgios Samaras effort.

Visiting keeper Nicky Weaver denied Bent, Matt Holland and Reid within a minute in the second half as Charlton held on for the win.

They were grateful to keeper Carson who made a string of fine saves and the woodwork denied City's Hatem Trabelsi.

Charlton: Carson, Young, El Karkouri, Diawara, Hreidarsson, Rommedahl (Hughes h-t), Faye, Reid (Hasselbaink 87), Thomas, D Bent
Subs not used: Andersen, Kishishev, M Bent.
