Charlton Athletic 3 Brentford 1

CHARLTON are into the hat for the FA Cup quarter-final draw after a comfortable win over Coca-Cola League 1 side Brentford in the fifth round at The Valley on Saturday.

Any early nerves for the home side were settled inside three minutes when top scorer Darren Bent latched onto Radostin Kishishev's pass before slotting the ball into the net past goalkeeper Stuart Nelson.

The visitors thought they could have had a penalty in the 12th minute but Hermann Hreidarsson's tangle with Lloyd Owusu went unpunished by referee Mike Riley.

Brentford enjoyed plenty of possession but lacked quality in the final third and they found themselves two goals down just before half-time when Jay Bothroyd fired low beyond Nelson after Kishishev had rolled a free-kick into his path.

Defender Chris Perry almost made it 3-0 in the 47th minute but his header was well saved by Nelson.

The Addicks then had a penalty appeal turned down after claiming handball against Michael Turner before Bryan Hughes sealed the win with half an hour to play when he finished impressively after being found by substitute Shaun Bartlett.

Luke Young should have made it four soon afterwards but he shot over after driving into the Brentford penalty area.

Substitute Isaiah Rankin notched a deserved consolation goal for the visitors with eight minutes to play after Charlton had failed to clear from a long throw-in.

Charlton: Myhre, Young, Perry, Hreidarsson, Powell, Thomas, Kishishev (Ambrose 74), Smertin, Hughes (Holland 82), Bothroyd (Bartlett 62), Bent.
Subs Not Used: Andersen, Spector.
