Charlton midfielder Darren Ambrose admitted that taunts from supporters after Tuesday's derby defeat by arch-rivals Crystal Palace had fired up the players ahead of Saturday's defeat of Ipswich.

Ambrose, who set up Charlton's winner in the 2-1 defeat of the Tractor Boys, said: "People said that Palace wanted it more than we did and that hurt.

"I don't think too many players slept well since Tuesday. We just wanted to make amends in front of our own supporters. And thankfully we did."

Manager Alan Pardew, who received the dreaded vote of confidence from Charlton plc chairman Derek Chappell, confessed afterwards: "It's not been the easiest of weeks but I got by with a lot of help from friends and family.

"And for that I've been extremely grateful. I thought we deserved to beat Ipswich on the strength of our second half performance.

"Right now I feel relieved and delighted."

The home side made the perfect start and were ahead inside five minutes when Nick Bailey drilled a 20-yard free-kick into the bottom right corner after a handball by Tommy Miller.

But Ipswich were level 11 minutes before the break when Jonathan Walters' cross was turned into his own net by defender Martin Cranie with Jonathan Stead lurking.

Ivan Campo almost put the visitors in front on the stroke of half-time but his free-kick rattled the crossbar with Nicky Weaver beaten.

The woodwork came to Charlton's rescue again when Alan Quinn's 50th-minute effort came back off the bar - again with Weaver stranded.

And the Addicks made the most of their good fortune when Volz put through his own goal under pressure from Hameur Bouazza.
