CHARLTON have pledged £100,000 to the Indian Ocean earthquake disaster relief fund.

It was announced last week that Barclays Premier League clubs would donate £50,000 each to form a £1m package to help those affected by the Boxing Day tragedy.

But Charlton’s directors, players and staff decided to double their contribution with a further £50,000 after witnessing the ongoing suffering in Asia.

Addicks captain Matt Holland said: "Just watching the pictures of the disaster on television has been horrifying, so I can barely imagine what it must be like to be involved in such a catastrophe.

"I think a lot of people feel helpless but, by contributing to the disaster relief fund, everyone can play their part in saving further lives and helping the region to recover.

“That's certainly what we feel at Charlton, and that is what has prompted the further donation by the directors, players and staff."

The pledge will be made to the Disasters Emergency Committee, which is distributing the money among charities and agencies undertaking the disaster relief work across the region.
