CHARLTON have completed the signings of Morocco centre-back Tala El Karkouri and Birmingham midfielder Bryan Hughes with the promise of more to come.
Both were signed on Bosman free transfers with El Karkouri, 27, arriving from Paris St Germain.
Hughes, 28, declined a new contract at St Andrews having cost the club £750,000 from Wrexham in March, 1997.
Manager Alan Curbishley has now turned his attentions to securing Denmark international winger Dennis Rommedahl from PSV Eindhoven. The two clubs have agreed a fee, as yet undisclosed but believed to be in the region of £2m.
The player was due at The Valley on Tuesday following his country’s weekend elimination from Euro 2004 by the Czech Republic.
Rommedahl joined PSV in 1996 and has been a regular since the 1997-98 season. He made 161 appearances for PSV and scored 29 goals. He has been capped 45 times for Denmark, including four at Euro 2004, and has scored nine goals.
Once the Rommedahl deal is finalised, Charlton will seek to reunite the winger with his PSV team-mate Mateja Kezman. He scored 31 goals in 29 appearances for PSV in the 2003-04 season and the previous year hit 35 in 33 games. The £5m-rated striker has already rejected West Brom’s efforts to sign him.
But Charlton's attempts to sign Kezman could be scuppered by Tottenham whose sporting director, Frank Arnesen, managed the Serbian striker in Holland.
“We are resigned to losing him to a club bigger than Charlton in England,” said PSV president Harry van Raaij.
Charlton are also interested in Everton midfielder Thomas Gravesen who wants to leave Goodison Park. But his preferred choice is thought to be a German club.
Meanwhile, Charlton’s match against Manchester United on November 20 at Old Trafford will be shown on pay-per-view television, as will their trip to Liverpool on October 23.
Further changes to the club’s fixtures, to meet Sky Television demands, are expected to be announced with matches against Blackburn and Southampton being switched to Monday nights.
