West Brom 2 Charlton 2 (aet)West Brom won 4-3 on penalties
CHARLTON suffered the heartbreak of losing a penalty shoot-out 4-3 after clawing back a 2-0 deficit in Tuesday's FA Cup third round replay thriller against West Bromwich Albion at The Hawthorns.
Luke Varney and Zheng Zhi both missed from the spot as Albion went through to earn a fourth round tie at Peterborough in two weeks.
Charlton looked down and out as Albion took a 2-0 lead thanks to goals from Roman Bednar in the in the 14th and James Morrison in the 51st minutes.
Darren Ambrose started the fightback when he made it 2-1 in the 64th minute and then substitute Chris Dickson forced extra-time with his first senior goal for the club in the 90th minute.
Charlton looked the better of the two in extra-time and the impressive Dickson nearly won the tie with three minutes remaining when Albion goalkeeper Dean Kiely stopped his shot from crossing the line at the second attempt.
Manager Alan Pardew was not too downhearted afterwards.
"West Brom are a good side and I thought we matched them for long periods," he said. "In extra-time I thought we would win because Dickson looked so lively when he came on.
"But the biggest game between the two clubs is the one at The Valley on Good Friday."
