Gillingham have re-signed striker Adebayo Akinfenwa from Northampton Town.

The big forward spent a year at Priestfield two seasons ago, forming a prolific partnership with Cody McDonald before returning to Sixfields.

The 31-year-old was released at the end of last season after Northampton lost the League 2 play-off final to Bradford.

Gills boss Martin Allen said: "He has signed a one-year contract and it is my gut feeling that he will do well in a Gillingham shirt, playing for the club he loves.

"Opposition teams cannot handle him, or deal with him and I'm sure, with the passion of our supporters, that he will he will respond on the big stage called Priestfield.

"I have him given him squad No.19 and he will be a very valuable member of our squad on and off the field."

Akinfenwa scored 11 goals in 44 games during his previous spell with the Gills.
