IN THREE years with Kent all-rounder Matt Dennington has given his all for the county club without sampling too much of the high life.
For one reason or another, the 23-year-old from Durban has found himself on the first team fringes and facing up to a pelvic complaint and a double stress fracture of the left-foot that could sideline him for the remainder of the summer.
To add insult to the injuries, Kent’s second round of player reviews for the year concluded this month that Dennington would again be allowed to talk to other counties, an indication that his services will not be retained come the season’s end.
Unable to play and therefore unlikely to attract another club for the foreseeable future, Dennington could be excused for thinking that life has dealt him a rough hand.
He said: "I think it’s a wear and tear thing, but it could not have come at a worse time for me in terms of my cricket career.
"My health is my first concern though. Once I’m well again I can sit down and figure out what it is I’m going to do."
Dennington has played only 11 first-class matches for the county averaging 19 with the bat and a 35 with the ball.
He added: "I’m not getting much opportunity to play in the first side and as far as Kent are concerned that tells the story itself because if you’re not being used it doesn’t really make sense to be kept on.
"I’ll be looking around, hoping to speak to other people and planning a future elsewhere."
