Scunthorpe United 3 Gillingham 1
GILLINGHAM were beaten 3-1 at Scunthorpe despite a brave display against the League 1 leaders on Saturday.
The second half dismissal of Ben Chorley hampered Gills’ efforts and from then on Scunthorpe turned the screw.
Scunthorpe had opened the scoring after 24 minutes when Richard Hinds headed home Lee Ridley’s cross.
Nine minutes into the second half Gillingham were deservedly level when Matt Jarvis tapped home after Gary Mulligan had lobbed the keeper.
The turning point came just after the hour, when Chorley was sent-off, after hauling down Jermaine Beckford as he ran on goal.
From the resulting free-kick Dave Mulligan scored to put Scunthorpe ahead.
Gillingham remained in the game and came close as Andrew Crofts headed against the bar, while Mulligan was also tugged in the box but the referee ignored the protests.
Scunthorpe rounded off the win with a goal in the final minute from Ian Morris.
Gillingham: Larrieu, Southall, Jackman, Flynn, Chorley, Johnson, Crofts, Bentley, McDonald (Sancho 65), Jarvis (Spiller 72), Mulligan.
Subs Not Used: Cox, Ndumbu-Nsungu, Collin.
