CHARLTON have suffered a huge setback with the news that skipper Matt Holland will be out for another month after damaging ankle ligaments on the opening day of the season.

The midfielder, who was ever-present last season, has not played since sustaining the injury in the 12th minute of the 4-0 defeat at Bolton. Now, the earliest he will be available will be after the next international break in October.

Manager Alan Curbishley confirmed: “I’m not expecting to have Matt or Shaun Bartlett back until after the next international break. It’s a blow but we have to get on with it.”

The Addicks must also do without centre-back Mark Fish at Birmingham on Saturday as he is suffering from conjunctivitis and has been unable to train.

He was replaced at the heart of the defence by Chris Perry in Monday’s disappointing goalless draw at home to Southampton. Perry made the most of his recall with an outstanding performance that has guaranteed his selection on Saturday.

In the absence of Holland and Fish, goalkeeper Dean Kiely will continue as captain - Charlton’s third already this season.

Charlton play away to Grimsby next in the second round of the Carling Cup.
