Addicks to break bank for keeper

TARGET: Robert Green

CHARLTON are poised to smash their transfer record when they sign Norwich City’s England goalkeeper Robert Green this week.

The Addicks are expected to pay £6million for the 26-year-old. The fee easily beats the £4,750,000 paid to Wimbledon for Jason Euell in July, 2001.

Green would have been selected for England’s World Cup squad in Germany had he not sustained a bad groin injury in a warm-up match against Belurus in May.

He expects to be playing again in three weeks and sees the move as crucial to resurrecting his England career.

Green’s arrival will almost certainly lead to the departure of Denmark international Stephan Andersen who has indicated to Addicks boss Iain Dowie that he will seek a transfer should he not start the season as first choice.
