Scott Barrett is back working alongside Mark Stimson

SCOTT BARRETT was “glad to be back” after taking his place alongside manager Mark Stimson on Saturday.

The 44-year-old former Gillingham keeper, who returned to Priestfield as Stimson’s assistant manager, still has fond memories of his time as a Gills player in what was an even hairier time in the club’s history.

“It was a strange time,” he said. “There were a few managers coming and going. Damien Richardson signed me and along the time I was there we had Mike Flanagan and Glenn Roeder.

“Glenn was there when we avoided relegation to the Conference when in the final home game we had to beat Halifax, which we did, and those sort of memories stick in your mind. It was fantastic that day and it was almost a full house.”

Barrett spent three seasons at Gillingham between 1992 and 1995 and made over 50 appearances and he was impressed with the changes in those 12 years since he left.

He said: “The club has just taken off. It’s a fantastic arena and a fantastic set up to get the players to be where they want to be they should use this as a fantastic platform to show what they’re all about. We feel that’s the same for us.”
