GOALKEEPER Jason Brown has promised not to allow his head to be turned by his new found status as Gillingham folk-hero after his brilliance earned a point from Saturday's 1-1 draw at Grimsby.

Brown, star of Gillingham's 1-0 win at Ipswich a week earlier, shook off flu symptoms to produce another five-star performance that frustrated the home side and their supporters.

Such has been his consistency this season that Brown has inevitably invited speculation linking him with bigger clubs and that he could soon oust Southampton's Paul Jones as Wales No 1.

The self effacing 20-year-old said: "I'm just enjoying my football so much right now and that is helping my confidence. People have suggested that some big name clubs will be watching me at Chelsea on Wednesday. I really don't know about that.

"What I do know is that the people who really matter, such as my fiancee, will be there. That's all that matters to me."

Gillingham player-manager Andy Hessenthaler was quick to praise Brown's immense contribution to Saturday's lucky point but confessed that his side would have had no complaints had they finished empty-handed.

"I'm disappointed," he said. "We were poor and didn't deserve anything from the game. That was probably our worst performance this season."

The player-manager added: "I accept full responsibility for their goal because it was my mistake. It looked as though the scoreline would stay the same until Mark Saunders came through for us at the end."
