CHRIS HINKINS, Betteshanger’s former England U18 forward, has joined Orpington-based club Westcombe Park.

The 19-year-old has decided that he must move up to a higher level of competitive rugby if he is to further his ambitions in the game. Westcombe Park play in National League Division 3, which is five leagues above the division that Betteshanger will be playing in this season.

Hinkins said: “It was a tough decision because I have got a lot of friends at Betteshanger, but they have all been very supportive and I think they understand why I am leaving. They are a great club and I couldn’t have wished to have started my career at a better club.”

Hinkins made his competitive debut for Westcombe Park against Old Colfeians on Saturday and, playing at second row, the 6ft 3in former Walmer School pupil helped them to a 26-22 victory in their first league game. He said: “It’s a good standard of rugby, and you are playing against a lot of ex-pros.”

Hinkins, who lives at Deal, is training to be a firefighter but plans to spend six months playing rugby in Australia and New Zealand next year.

Betteshanger have lost two other forwards who helped them win promotion to the London League Four South East this season. Dan Ford has switched to Thanet Wanderers and his brother and fellow prop Matt has joined St Albans club Old Albanians.
