MATT CARRUTHERS: First half goal

Weston-super-Mare 0 - 1 Welling United

WELLING maintained their unbeaten start to the season thanks to a first half goal from Matt Carruthers at Weston-super-Mare on Saturday.

The Wings dominated the first period and thoroughly deserved their advantage when Danny Kedwell made ground down the left wing and crossed for Carruthers to volley home on 26 minutes.

The home side were lucky not to have already seen keeper Paul Thompson sent off.

Inside the first 10 minutes Mark McKeever headed past his own keeper and Thompson then brought down Kedwell. However, in the first of a series of bizarre decisions, referee Andrew Newell only awarded Welling a corner.

From the corner Kedwell headed against the far post.

Striker James Pinnock should have doubled the advantage six minutes before the break, but Thompson saved his low drive with his legs.

The second half proved a more even affair, although Weston failed to trouble Welling keeper Jamie Turner.

Their biggest danger came from set pieces as the referee gave a number of dubious decisions against the Wings.

Welling successfully held on despite late Weston pressure, although they picked up three cautions in the last five minutes for their troubles.
