Chief executive Jamie Clifford predicts no “major upheaval” at Kent this winter, as the club seek to keep together the squad and staff that enjoyed a winning run this summer.

Despite seeing the Spitfires humbled in the semi-final of the Royal London One-Day Cup at Edgbaston last week and seeing their LV= County Championship promotion hopes fizzle out, Mr Clifford said he hopes the past two months of one and four-day success will serve as a ‘springboard’ to glory next year and beyond.

He said: “It’s been a good period and one we can hopefully use as a springboard to getting that consistency in that style throughout the season. It’s fine having a period going well but it just makes it more frustrating that it can’t happen more regularly.”

Mr Clifford added: “It does feel that things are coming together but ultimately we’re judged on how many times we walk away with a trophy.

“There are times when it feels positive but we’re not going to accept this is as far as we’re going to take it, we want to go on and be successful in all forms.

“This year, our younger batsmen have stepped up. It would be great if next year some of our younger bowlers stepped-up.

“It’s about building blocks, taking steps in the right direction. At some point we hope it all comes together and leads to a sustained period of success.”

Mr Clifford also revealed that contract discussions were ongoing with players and staff, adding: “Things are moving in the right direction at this stage.

“There’s still some work to do but I don’t see it as a winter of major upheaval and we have had a few of those in recent years. Let’s take what we’ve achieved this year and see if we can build on it, a key part of that is making sure we hold together.

“All those discussions are ongoing with support staff and players. At this stage I can’t say much more but in the next month or so, things will become clear.”
