Nine-year-old Richard Bennett awarded the Gold Cup in kata and a trophy for his performance in the light contact continuous discipline

MINSTER youngster Richard Bennett walked away with two top awards from the British Open Championships.

The nine-year-old, who attends the Chum Kune Do martial arts academy in Rainham, was awarded the Gold Cup in kata and also walked away with a trophy for his performance in the light contact continuous discipline.

The event took place in Rainham on Sunday and he fended off national champions to record a near perfect score in kata to take the trophy.

He was just a point away from a perfect score.

Richard's training also paid off in the next competition he entered, as he traded spinning kicks and punches with his rivals, to again earn a trophy.

His father Mick was at the event and was delighted with his son's efforts.

He said: "The family, club and his supporters who went to watch were very proud.

"He moved so lightly on his feet with so much style and grace. A special thanks goes to The Playa in Minster for their sponsorship and support."
