ROLAND EDGE’S search for a new club after rejecting Gillingham’s terms for a new deal in the close-season ended on Monday when he joined Scottish League, Premier Division Hibernian.

The 24-year-old left-back signed a one-year deal for the Easter Road club, whose manager Bobby Williamson is expected to delay his debut until he is match-fit.

Edge had been training with newly-promoted Division 2 side Hartlepool last week when he received the call from Hibs.

Attempts at an earlier transfer collapsed when Hibs turned their attention to Newcastle’s Gary Caldwell. When that deal fell through, they reverted to Edge.

His agent Andrew Mills said: “Roland is delighted to have got his career back on track and is looking forward to playing in front of 60,000 fans against Celtic and Rangers.

“He’s had to wait longer than he wanted to get another club but he is relieved it’s all over.”

And this week it emerged that Edge’s Gillingham replacement, John Hills, was on the verge of joining Hibs from Blackpool until what was described as a “hitch” scuppered the deal and he joined Gillingham instead.

Former Blackpool goalkeeper Tony Caig, a friend of Hills, played for Hibs last season and recommended him to the club.
