Joe Denly will join up with the England Under-19 squad on Monday

JOE DENLY joins up with the England Under-19 squad on Monday ahead of three one day internationals and four Test matches against Sri Lanka.

The Whitstable teenager made his mark on the winter tour to India but this will be his last home series at this level, as he turns 20 next March.

Denly, who made his championship debut against Gloucestershire at Maidstone in June, when Robert Key was ruled out with a wrist injury, revealed he turned down the chance to lead Young England.

He said; "Paul Farbrace sat me down and told me that they wanted to offer it to me. It was quite an honour to be considered, but I told him I didn’t want to do it.

"I have never really had the experience, I am never the most vocal person out on the field, and don’t see myself as a captain.

"It may seem rather selfish, but while I’m 100 per cent for the team, I want to be able to concentrate on my own game."

Denly added: "I will never forget my championship debut, not just because it was a match that we won, and then had eight points deducted.

"I arrived at the ground on the first morning, not knowing if I was going to play. Keysey then failed a fitness test and I only found out half an hour before the start that I was in the side."

The first one ODI is at New Road, Worcester, on Tuesday, followed by two more at Old Trafford on Thursday and Friday, July 28 and 29, both being screened live on Sky.

Test matches will be played at Shenley, Scarborough and Headingley between August 3 and 18.
