FORD FOCUS: Graham Ford

TUNBRIDGE WELLS Festival Week turned out a very good one for the Spitfires and hopefully the fans enjoyed some exciting and spectacular cricket.

Justin Kemp’s powerful, unbeaten 54 from just 20 balls against Sussex ensured he came home with 111 runs off 53 balls in the two one-day matches played at this picturesque venue.

In all he has faced only 107 balls in C&G Trophy cricket this season and has already scored 170 runs with 16 sixes to boot, making him leader of the Sky Sports Sixes League with Neil Carter of Warwickshire in second place with 11 sixes.

Hopefully Kempie continues with this magnificent form and I for one hope that youngsters watch Justin carefully and observe that, although he hits the ball a long way, he still applies good batting basics to his powerful onslaughts by predominantly hitting very straight.

As always, practice is so important and Kempie has put many long hours of work into developing this part of his game.

Rob Key and Martin van Jaarsveld also showed outstanding form putting together match-winning partnerships in the Warwickshire and Sussex matches.

Both have sound techniques and read match situations so well and in both games they displayed their impressive ability to handle high quality spin bowling.
