A new attitude is paying off for striker Antonio German.
The 22-year-old frontman netted twice in Gillingham’s 6-1 win over Faversham Town on Tuesday night.
That brace follows goals against Welling and Dartford and he currently leads the Gills’ pre-season goalscoring charts.
German was unsure about his own future at Gills, after being loaned out last season to League 2 Northampton, but he was given the green light to prove his worth by boss Peter Taylor.
The striker looks like he is making the most of that opportunity.
“I text the gaffer in the summer to ask him, not necessarily if I was going to play, but if I was in his plans,” German said.
“He said come back and show me what you can do and I’ve returned for pre-season with a different attitude.
“Strikers work off form and I just hope I can get into that starting line-up for the opening game of the season at MK Dons - we all want to play and everyone is working really hard in training to grab the shirt.”
Assistant boss Andy Hessenthaler watched from the sidelines at Faversham and believes German is giving the other strikers a run for their money.
“He looked bright and worked very hard,” Hessenthaler said.
“He should have got a hat-trick but he’s doing well and had a good pre-season. He’s pushing for MK Dons.”
