GILLINGHAM coach Wayne Jones says the club are cooking up a “recipe for relegation” after their woeful display against Wigan on Tuesday night.

Talking after the 3-0 home defeat, Jones said they had ‘six cup finals’ to save their Division 1 status.

He stressed: “We’ve got to be realistic and the way we played was a recipe for relegation. We don’t like talking about it but the players have got to stand up and be counted.”

He added: “It wasn’t acceptable, and the manager made that clear to the players. Our back four were bullied out of it by their forwards and let them dictate to us in everything they did.

“We played like there were 11 strangers out there who had met for the first time 10 minutes before the game. It could have been five or six and we weren’t good enough.

"We were far below what we need to be to stay in the league and if we carry on like that we won’t stay up.

“About 11 years ago we were one win from going out of the league and this is almost as important as that. There’s no way we want to be in Division Two. We’ve got six cup finals and we know what’s required.”

Paul Smith maybe ready for Saturday's game against West Brom but is more likely to return for the Walsall game on Easter Monday.

A scan on his foot has shown no breaks but it is still badly bruised.
