Gillingham have sold out their initial allocation of tickets for their weekend trip to Portsmouth.

The club’s penultimate game of the season at Fratton Park could be pivotal, as they attempt to avoid the drop in League 1, and fans have quickly snapped up the tickets made available.

Portsmouth allocated the Gills 1,000 seats in the Milton End for Saturday’s fixture.

There are redevelopment works taking place at Fratton Park and some home fans are being moved from their usual seats in the South Stand. There is a limit on the number of away tickets available.

Portsmouth are spending over £11m on ground improvements, hoping to complete them in time for next season, with current works meaning 200 home season ticket holders have been relocated. Work is also taking place in the club’s north stand to add extra seating.

The Gills says they are “working on trying to get more tickets for everyone” but demand is high considering the magnitude of the game.

Gillingham look like needing at least one win to stay in League 1 from their last two matches. Visiting Priestfield on the last day of the season next Saturday (Saturday, April 30) is promotion-chasing Rotherham.

There were over 8,000 Gills fans in attendance at Priestfield on Monday as the club played out a 0-0 draw against Fleetwood infront of a season’s best attendance.

Covid restrictions meant fans were unable to attend last season’s match which finished 1-1. This weekend’s away following will be a lot higher than the 672 away attendance when there was another draw in 2019, that game ending goalless.

In October 2018 fans watched as Tom Eaves scored a stunner to open the scores and Alex Lacey added the second in a 2-0 win. In March 2018 Conor Wilkinson and Lee Martin scored well-taken efforts in a 3-1 victory.

Portsmouth’s home last league win over the Gills came in February 2003. Those lucky enough to get tickets for Saturday’s game will hope Gills’ good form continues.
