Gills in no rush to make signings

Mark Stimson is unlikely to add to his squad

The loan transfer window closes for the final time on Thursday, but Gillingham manager Mark Stimson won’t be making any hasty signings.

Stimson has a few names in the pipeline, but most players available on loan will only sign in return for a guaranteed starting place and the Gills boss is reluctant to unsettle a team who have put the club within sight of the League 2 automatic promotion places.

Saturday’s defeat at Grimsby, their first defeat in nine games, hasn’t made him think any differently.

“One game and one defeat won’t change what I see out there and what the boys have got,” he said.

“I’m quietly confident these players will take us where we want to be. “If someone jumps out at us and we think he could be effective then we might do that.”

Stimson’s only concern is the three players he has on nine bookings, one away from a two-match ban.

Barry Fuller, Adam Miller and Mark Bentley will be suspended if they reach 10 bookings before April 12, but the Gills boss is confident the players in reserve are good enough to step in if required.

“That’s three more games and those games we’ve got coming up are quite competitive,” said Stimson. “I expect one or two to pick up a booking but, if we do, we have the likes of Stuart Lewis and Garry Richards.”
