Peter Taylor praised Gillingham's pre-season work ethic after their 2-0 friendly win over Bromley.
Gills fielded two teams at Hayes Lane on Tuesday night, changing all 11 players at the break.
Both goals came in the second half, with Danny Kedwell's penalty followed by a Brennan Dickenson strike as Gills eased past their Conference South opponents.
Boss Taylor said: "I'm seeing some good things and I think in pre-season you see some bad things as well and they're the things you try to correct.
"But as a bunch they're doing really well, they're working extremely hard.
"We had a very hard day on Monday, which isn't what you'd normally do the day before a game, but the players have turned up and worked extremely hard, all 22 of them.
"We've got another good game on Saturday, against Welling, and probably most players there will play 45.
"We just want to be careful with the fitness levels at the minute."
Summer signing Dickenson showed good pace down the left and deserved his goal.
Taylor added: "I thought the second goal was terrific. Matty Fish played in a great ball for Jermaine McGlashan and then Jermaine plays it back for Brennan, who still had a bit to do but his first touch was really good.
"I think we have got some better pace this year but we're also playing a little bit better as well, keeping the ball a bit more patiently."
Taylor watched from the stands, only briefly leaving his seat to question a poor challenge on Bradley Dack during the first half.
He said: "I thought the tackle was a bit naughty for pre-season.
"It happens because sometimes the non-league teams want to show that maybe they should have been professional as well and sometimes somebody's going to try extremely hard to win a tackle or get to a pass.
"In the end it calmed down but I was just a bit concerned it was a touch high."
