Welling United suffered a cruel late defeat at Wrexham on Saturday, conceding twice in the final six minutes having led for almost an hour.

Seeking just their second Vanarama Premier win of the campaign, the Wings desperately clung onto their lead, despite having to play the final half-hour with 10-men, only to be undone by two goals in as many minutes in the dying moments.

Harry Beautyman put the visitors ahead shortly after the half-hour after Tobi Sho-Silva robbed Jay Harris in midfield and set up his teammate to slot low into the corner.

Barney Williams was booked for time-wasting before the half-time interval had arrived and Sho-Silva and Jake Gallagher found their way into the book for unsporting behaviour in the opening minutes of the second half, while Jon Nouble was shown a red card after picking up his second caution on the hour for a foul on Louis Moult.

Despite a rearguard effort from the Wings, top-scorer Moult levelled the scores after 84 minutes, sweeping in after a good run and cross from Wesley York and within 60 seconds Wings keeper Jonathan Henly was booked for time-wasting of his own.

However he was beaten for a second time just seconds after the restart as Joe Clarke stole the points four minutes from time with a deflected effort from distance to send the crowd of 2,857 at the Racecourse Ground – save for 28 travelling Welling fans – wild.

The defeat left Welling third-bottom, with six points from nine games, ahead of Tuesday’s visit of Lincoln City to Park View Road (7.45pm).
