GILLINGHAM boss Andy Hessenthaler and his players are under growing pressure to ensure the club's four-year stay in Division 1 does not end in relegation. And the fight continues against Rotherham at Priestfield this Saturday.
Having won the war of nerves to beat fellow strugglers Nottingham Forest two weeks ago, Gills will be going all out to deliver another win.
Burnley’s point from a 1-1 draw at Nottingham Forest on Wednesday saw them go above Gillingham, who are now three points above the relegation zone in 21st position. While Gillingham entertain the Yorkshire club, Derby are at home to Forest.
“When you’re down there, it’s the bravest ones that come through and we’ve got to show character,” said Hessenthaler.
“If we do that we’ll be okay but it’s going to take courage beyond the call of duty. It will be a battle until the end but we’re up for it. It’s no good us harping on about all the injuries because it’s important we stay positive and keep on performing the way we did at Norwich on Tuesday.”
Rotherham battered third-placed Sheffield United with their direct, route-one approach in Tuesday’s 1-1 draw at Millmoor and Hessenthaler is expecting the same this weekend.
He added: “All our games are going to be tough from here on in but Rotherham are a physical side, which we can match. But being the home side, the pressure is on us to perform."
In a boost to under-fire strikers Mamady Sidibe and Patrick Agyemang, Hessenthaler said: “I thought their performances at Norwich was the best they have played together.
“Patrick was a handful and we need him to be like that for the rest of the season.”
Hessenthaler returns having completed a two-match suspension and Chris Hope could be available after a long-term ankle injury. But Danny Spiller is doubtful with a foot injury.
