THE Gillingham-based Invicta Dynamos ice hockey team suffered last-gasp heartache away at Solihull on Sunday as the Barons stole the show and the points with 62 seconds left on the clock.

The Mos had further bad news to contend with as star forward Duane Ward picked up a gross misconduct charge at the end of the game after telling the referee exactly what he thought of his performance. The 25-year-old Canadian who is the team's joint leading goal-scorer with 16 in 13 games could face a six-game ban with immediate effect but the players, management and fans alike hope the English Ice Hockey disciplinary committee will listen to a strong case for Ward.

In what was always going to be a tough game the Dynamos started well against the Barons going 3-1 up in the first period with goals from Matt Beveridge, Elliot Andrews and Sean Clement.

But the home side clawed their way back to 3-3 by the end of the second. Beveridge's 100th goal for the club put Invicta back in front but Samuli Mykkaen sent the home crowd wild with his late winner to clinch it 5-4.

On Saturday the Mos were in Nottingham. Player coach Andy Hannah said: "We were 1-0 down at the end of the first period but came back well. Their goalie always plays a blinder against us and he did again saving more than 50 shots.

"Two late goals to make it 7-4 put a gloss on the result but in truth it was a hard-fought game where we didn't play our best but made sure we took home the points. We played better against Solihull but nothing went our way."

This weekend is a big one for Invicta with title hopes in the balance as Invicta travel to top-of-the-table Isle of Wight Raiders on Saturday and play Solihull at home.
