Ashley Jackson's medal hopes are at an end

Ashley Jackson's hopes of an Olympic medal are over despite a battling performance as GB's men drew with reigning champions Australia in Beijing.

The 20-year-old from King's Hill, West Malling, came off the bench during the 3-3 rollercoaster at the Olympic Green Stadium but could not add to the single goal he scored in the opening game of the tournament.

The former Sutton Valence School pupil watched from the sidelines as Britain took a 1-0 lead into the break but a flurry of second half goals saw the Aussies take a 2-1 lead before Britain fought back to go infront, only to concede a last-gasp equaliser.

Britain had needed to secure an 8-0 win to qualify for the semi-finals of the competition having beaten Pakistan and South Africa, drawn with Canada and lost to European champions the Netherlands - who topped the group.

Third placed Britain will now face a match against South Korea - third in the other pool - to decide fifth and sixth place in the early hours of Saturday morning.
