GILLINGHAM have bolstered their lightweight attack by signing Bas Savage on a short-term deal.

The 24-year-old joins the club on three-month contract after spending the summer without a club following his release from Bristol City.

Gills' strikers have failed to deliver so far this season, with just three goals coming from the summer's new recruits, Guylain Ndumbu-Nsungu, Gary Mulligan and Dean McDonald.

The tall and mobile striker will add a physical presence to manager Ronnie Jepson's attacking possibilities.

Jepson said: "We'll have a good look at him and if he's anything then we'll sort him out and if not then we've not lost anything.

"It gives us another option and another body to work with because we need that."

Savage spent time with the club during pre-season and made a half-hour appearance for Gillingham during Andy Hessenthaler's testimonial match against West Ham.

Savage started his professional career at Reading, after moving from Walton & Hersham for £20,000, and had brief loan stints at Wycombe and Bury.

The striker has scored just one senior goal so far, however, when at his previous club Bristol City, where he made 23 appearances.
