Staying at Gillingham was a “no-brainer” insisted Danny Kedwell despite interest from elsewhere.

The 30-year-old was linked with a move back to former club AFC Wimbledon but on Monday penned a new two-year deal at Gillingham.

“There were a few clubs interested but I wanted to see what Gillingham had to offer first,” he told Gills Player.

“They offered me a two-year deal and I enjoy playing for the club that I support. It’s just easy for me and my family to be here and it was a no-brainer. I love playing here.

“I have had a promotion and I have helped keep the club up in League 1 and it was just disappointing to have ended the season with an injury.”

Kedwell is now itching for the new season to start, in August, so he can get back to where he left off.

“I was flying in the first half of the season, with 10 goals before Christmas,” he said.

“I could have ended up with 20. Because of that I have a bit of unfinished business and hopefully next year I can start off with a bang.

“It was gutting that the season ended. My hernia injury should have only kept me out for four weeks but then I got injured in a reserve game and was told I wouldn’t play again this season. I wasn’t having that. I was determined to be back before the end of the season.”

Kedwell made a brief appearance against Tranmere, helping them to a crucial 2-0 win.

He said: “I had the injection so I could play against Tranmere, which was an important game and it was nice for the gaffer to say, ‘go and get it done, we need you’.

“When I went on the crowd was lifted and it was such a buzz. It was a great feeling but the gaffer didn’t want to risk me again incase I was needed for the last game.

“I played in the final game (against Shrewsbury) and was ready to go again but the season is over now. I have been working hard in the gym since then and I am determined to come back fitter than ever.”
