Kent were on the wrong end of a brilliant century by Essex's Tom Westley at Colchester on Saturday.

Westley hit 105 from just 58 balls as Essex's total of 209-5 was well beyond a Spitfires team, who were dismissed for 146 inside 16 overs having collapsed to 17-3 at one stage.

Kent had started well having won the toss and put the visitors in. Darren Stevens removed Mark Pettini without score from the second ball of the game and the following over saw New Zealander Jesse Ryder depart for one, caught behind off Mitch Claydon.

However, Westley then took centre stage and dominated a 92-run stand with England's Ravi Bopara (23).

He hit 10 fours and six sixes, including four successive boundaries off Fabian Cowdrey (0-39 in three), before falling to Claydon while Ben Harmison's three overs cost 62 runs.

James Foster added 36 not out and Ryan ten Doeschate went to the last ball of the innings for a 15-ball 37 which included four sixes.

Kent's reply was quickly behind the pace as Daniel Bell-Drummond went second ball for four, skipper Rob Key was bowled for one and Cowdrey dismissed for a single.

Sam Northeast and Alex Blake came together to add some momentum but Blake, having hit three sixes in a 16-ball 29 went with the score 61-4 in the eighth over.

Darren Stevens made 19 and the writing was on the wall when Northeast came dancing down the pitch to spinner Tim Phillips and was stumped for 41.

Ryder then worked his way quickly through the tail and Spitfires' misery was complete after 15.5 overs when Adam Riley was dismissed for four, sealing a 63-run defeat.
