MARK STIMSON believes Simon King has all makings of a future Gillingham captain.
King’s error led to Huddersfield’s goal on Saturday but the Gills manager knows it was a rare mistake from a defender who he hopes will become a key part of his plans for the club.
Stimson handed King the captain’s armband for the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy game against MK Dons last Tuesday, in the absence of regular skipper Andrew Crofts, and has no doubt that the 24-year-old could do the job again in the future.
“He’s got a massive future and I see him as a future captain of this football club without a shadow of doubt,” said Stimson.
“Simon has been absolutely outstanding for us in the last six or seven games.
“Everyone makes mistakes. The big teams do and they’ll be senior professionals on thousands of pounds making mistakes. He did, but good teams help your mate out, and that’s what the boys did.
“He’s been immaculate and since we’ve moved him into his favoured position you can see why the club have paid money for him and again the chairman was a big part in that.”
