MARGATE fielded a mix and match squad in Tuesday night's 1-0 win at Tonbridge.

Jamie Omaragbun, one of several triallists given a run-out scored the winner.

Gate manager Chris Kinnear said: "We looked alright, considering we had a few we hadn't seen before.

"Defensively we were sound, and Charlie Mitten looked very safe. We were a bit light up front, but it's something to work on, and we are a lot more positive than we were this time last year.

"We are probably a week or two behind other teams, but the season is still five weeks away, so we didn't want to do too much too quickly, and just get a game under our belts.

"Tonbridge were very competitive and they are a very ambitious club, so it was an ideal game for us."

Only six of last season's squad figured in the game, bolstered by former Welling pair Danny Chapman and Dean Standen, with several other new faces looking to impress.

Margate have decided not to stage any pre-season friendlies at Hartsdown Park before the Ryman League Premier Division campaign starts on August 20.

The next friendly is at Dover on Tuesday. They have also arranged another warm-up game against Ashford at Homelands on August 4.
