Professional pride triggered Gills’ improvement at Bristol City after manager Peter Taylor criticised the first-half performance.

Charlie Lee replaced Amine Linganzi at the break and led the fightback by scoring the equaliser at Ashton Gate.

Gills still lost but took heart from their second-half display.

Lee said: “The gaffer just thought something needed to be changed. I’d like to say it was totally me that changed the game but it’s not.

“Sometimes it’s little things that get together and we went out as a whole team and fought well in the first 20 minutes of the second half.

'You’ve got your own standards so we went out there and had to change that.'

“The gaffer questioned what we did in the first half and the players don’t like that. You’ve got to prove yourself.

“The second half we put a lot of pressure on them. We got the goal and looked on top and I think we let them off the hook then.

“Maybe we dropped off and gave them too much respect and they punished us with a good finish.

Lee was on target for the development side last Wednesday but his strike at Bristol City was his first competitive goal of the season.

He said: “It’s been frustrating but we’ve got to get results and I’d rather someone else scored and we got a point or three.”
